A uniformed man shown dueling with wax bullets, as the caption on this 1909 Bain News Service glass negative describes, reflects a form of staged combat that used harmless projectiles in place of lead. Wax bullets let participants take aim at one another without real danger, so such contests were often demonstrations or practice rather than true affairs of honor. George Grantham Bain's agency sold news photographs to New York newspapers in the early twentieth century, and this negative is one of many it preserved. The title comes from information written on the negative or its caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
