Here a traveler opens her luggage on the pier of the North German Lloyd line, the German steamship company whose liners docked on the Hudson in New York. Customs inspection of baggage happened on the pier as passengers came ashore, and the scene shows that routine at close range. The Bain News Service, which supplied press photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, made the negative, and its caption data is recorded here as unverified. The picture is a useful glimpse of the transatlantic passenger trade and of the paperwork and scrutiny that came with it.
