Tawa, the Sun Kachina, is one of the most widely known figures in the Hopi and Zuni ceremonial world, and this color halftone reproduces a drawing by Gene Meany Hodge made for her 1967 book on kachina dolls. Hodge, who worked from carvings and ceremonial knowledge shared with her, rendered the figure as a frontispiece to introduce readers to the dolls and the folktales attached to them. The plate is worth noticing for its precision as a printed reproduction: it carries the careful line and color of the original drawing, translated through the halftone process used in mid-century book publishing. Kachinas represent spiritual beings in Pueblo belief, and dolls like this one were given to children as teaching objects.
