Steve Mopope painted this Kiowa wedding ceremony in watercolor, and the scene is known to us through a color photomechanical reproduction made for a 1929 book. Mopope was one of the Kiowa Five, a group of Oklahoma artists who gained wide attention in the 1920s for paintings that drew on traditional Plains life. The book, *Kiowa Indian Art*, was compiled by Oscar Brousse Jacobson, the University of Oklahoma art professor who encouraged these painters. Its reproductions helped carry Kiowa art to audiences far beyond Oklahoma.
