Minnehaha Falls, on Minnehaha Creek in what is now Minneapolis, is the subject of this glass-plate negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The falls drop about 53 feet over a limestone and sandstone ledge, and the site drew visitors long before the photographer set up his camera, partly because Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem "The Song of Hiawatha" named it. The company's large-format plates, many of them of scenic spots like this one, were sold as views for tourists and collectors. This particular negative is cracked through the center, a reminder of how fragile these early glass supports were.
