Upper Trenton Falls is the highest cascade in the Trenton Gorge of the West Canada Creek, in Oneida County, New York, and this glass negative shows the upper stretch of the gorge where the water drops over the rock in a series of steps. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, made the image between 1900 and 1915 as part of its large catalog of American scenery, much of it sold as hand-colored photochrome prints. Trenton Falls had drawn painters and tourists since the early 1800s, and the deep, narrow canyon with its layered limestone walls was one of the best-known natural sights in the state.
