State Street in Chicago was already the city's busiest commercial thoroughfare when this stereograph was taken, and the card's bilingual title, with its Spanish line beneath the English, suggests it was meant for a broad market. Street traffic of the 1890s was a mix of horse-drawn wagons, streetcars and pedestrians, all competing for the same narrow roadway, and the crowding visible here captures the congestion that city planners and merchants were trying to solve. Stereographs like this one were viewed through a special lens so that two nearly identical photographs fused into a single image with depth, letting viewers feel as though they stood in the middle of the scene.
