Few pictures on this board show a particular piece of hardware, but this one records a Wiard 6-pounder, a rifled iron field gun, standing at the Washington Arsenal in 1862. The arsenal was one of the Army's main ordnance depots during the war, where guns, carriages, and ammunition were stored, tested, and issued to units heading to the front. The photograph was made from a wet collodion glass negative, the process then standard for documentary work, and it was taken by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer who worked during the war. Its record shows the gun as a surviving example of the equipment that filled the capital's depots as the Union army expanded.
