The scaffold stands in the yard of the Old Arsenal in Washington, with the four conspirators hanging from it while a crowd fills the enclosure around them. The executions on July 7, 1865, punished the men and woman convicted for their roles in the plot that killed President Abraham Lincoln, and the packed yard shows how much public attention the hangings drew. The photograph was made by David B. Woodbury, who worked with the wet collodion process, which required the glass negative to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried.
