The Panama-California Exposition in San Diego opened in 1915 to mark the completion of the Panama Canal, and this print records one of its many views of the fairgrounds in Balboa Park. The exposition was designed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style with white stucco towers and arcaded courts, a look that shaped the park's architecture for decades afterward. The Library of Congress holds it as part of the Wittemann Collection, a body of commercial photographs of American expositions made by the Wittemann Brothers studio, which documented these fairs for sale to visitors and publishers. The caption card's tracings, "Geogr." and "Mines," point to the exhibit categories it was filed under, though the record notes that these details are unverified.
