From the air, this view shows the grounds of Balboa Park in San Diego as the California Pacific International Exposition was preparing to open in 1935. The fair marked the 400th anniversary of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's landing on the California coast, and its buildings extended the Spanish Colonial Revival style that had shaped the park since the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The photograph was made by H.A. Erickson, though its caption data is unverified and the exact date should be read with some caution.
