The Charles River is the subject here, the slow tidal stream that winds past Boston and separates the city proper from Cambridge and its neighboring towns. Boston grew up on a narrow peninsula bordered by water, and the river shaped its shipping, its mill sites and its early bridges, including the crossings that linked the settlement to the north shore. Maps of the region from this period often treated the river as both a boundary and a working waterway, which is why its course appears so prominently in cartography of the area. Looking closely at how the banks and tidal flats are drawn can reveal how much of the coastline was still changing as the city expanded.
