Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet the highest peak in the Northeast, is the subject here, and the view is pitched from high above to take in the ridges and valleys spreading out below the summit. Bird's-eye panoramas like this were a popular way in the nineteenth century to show a wide region at once, at a time when visitors were reaching the peak by horse trail and, later, by rail. The summit's hotels and weather station made it a destination, and the sweeping perspective shows how the White Mountains appeared to people who could not otherwise see so far.
