Few views of the city capture downtown Boston as it stood after the fire of November 1872. The blaze started in a warehouse on Summer Street and burned roughly 65 acres of closely built commercial blocks before it was brought under control, destroying more than 700 buildings. Bird's-eye views like this one, drawn from an imagined high vantage point, were popular in the late nineteenth century because they let viewers read the streets and blocks at a glance, making the scale of the loss easy to grasp.
