This view traces the coast from Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod, across Massachusetts Bay to Boston. Its high, imagined vantage point, as if seen from a balloon, was a popular device in nineteenth-century mapmaking, which let artists show towns, harbors and roads in one readable scene. Provincetown grew up around whaling and fishing, and Boston was one of the region's busiest ports, so the two places belonged to the same maritime world. The shoreline and the small buildings along the water reward close study.
