George Mifflin Dallas (1792-1864) is the subject of this engraving, a portrait by P.H. Reason, rather than a view of the Texas city that shares his surname, which is a common mix-up for visitors browsing the Dallas board. Dallas was a Pennsylvania lawyer and Democratic politician who served as United States Senator from Pennsylvania, as Minister to Russia, and as Vice President under James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849. The caption card carries no date, so the print's exact year is unknown, but the portrait reflects the kind of engraved likeness widely circulated to document prominent national figures in the mid-nineteenth century.
