George M. Dallas, the Pennsylvania lawyer and politician whose portrait this is, was elected vice president in 1844 on a ticket with James K. Polk, and this hand-colored lithograph was issued by Nathaniel Currier that same year to capitalize on the campaign. Currier's firm was then a young New York shop that produced cheap, colorful prints for a mass market, and political portraits of candidates sold briskly during election seasons. Collectors of Currier work will recognize the catalog reference in the record, which places the print among the firm's documented output of the 1840s. The image is a useful window into how partisan imagery reached ordinary households before photography became common.
