This view shows Old Fort Dallas on the Miami River, one of the few surviving structures from the area's earliest years as a U.S. Army post. The fort dates to the Seminole Wars of the 1830s and 1840s, when the army built a string of posts across South Florida. By the time this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1915, the settlement had grown quickly after the railroad reached the area in 1896, and the old fort stood as a reminder of the frontier era. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced views of American towns and landmarks for sale as postcards and prints.
