Here the subject is a man rather than a place: George Mifflin Dallas, the Pennsylvania lawyer and politician whose name is often linked to the city of Dallas, Texas. He served as vice president under James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849, and as presiding officer of the Senate he cast the tie-breaking vote that passed the Tariff of 1846, a decision that drew sharp criticism in Pennsylvania. He later served as minister to Russia and then to Britain. The caption card gives no date for the portrait, so its exact age is unknown.
