Sarah Bernhardt, the French stage star born in 1844, appears here with her company on March 2, 1906, just before her first performance under canvas in Dallas, Texas. Late in her career she toured the United States widely, and she sometimes played in temporary venues when no permanent hall suited the troupe. The photograph was made by Glogenson, a Dallas studio, and its caption card names the actors, the tents and the city, though the record notes these details are unverified. It offers a glimpse of a touring company's life away from the footlights.
