A steam shovel works a trench on the outskirts of Dallas in this print, with the machine itself as the clear focus. Around 1907, steam-powered excavators like this one were becoming common on American construction sites, where they replaced crews of men with picks and shovels on jobs such as sewer lines, water mains, and railroad grading. Dallas was expanding quickly in those years, and public works of this kind helped support its growth. The photograph is a useful record of how heavy earthmoving looked before gasoline and diesel power took over.
