Alexander Dallas Bache is shown in this head-and-shoulders portrait, turned slightly to the left, in a photograph made sometime between 1860 and 1867. Bache, a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin, served as superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey from 1843 until his death in 1867, and he shaped it into a center for precise scientific measurement. The portrait dates from the last years of his life, when he was also a leading figure in American science and in the scientific community of Washington. The record does not name the photographer, but the sitting falls within the decades when portrait photography became common among public officials and scientists.
