Uncle Sam is summoned to the center of this navy recruiting poster, with a line attributed to Theodore Roosevelt urging Americans to stand by him for liberty against tyranny. The image is the work of Louis Raemaekers, a Dutch cartoonist whose sharply anti-German drawings were widely reprinted during the First World War, and who produced patriotic cartoons for Century Magazine. Dated 1917, the year the United States entered the war, it reflects the push to bring volunteers into the navy as American forces expanded.
