Here the camera turns on the working press at Gettysburg: Alfred R. Waud, an illustrator for *Harper's Weekly*, sits at his sketching work on the battlefield in July 1863. Readers of the period mostly saw Waud's drawings rather than photographs, because weekly magazines could not yet reproduce photographic images directly and relied on wood engravings cut from artists' sketches. The stereograph format, with its pair of side-by-side glass negatives, was designed to give viewers a sense of depth, and this view records one of the many artists and correspondents who followed the army after the battle.
