Here an artist is the subject rather than the battle: Alfred R. Waud, the illustrator for Harper's Weekly, is shown sketching on the Gettysburg field. Waud's drawings were engraved and printed in the magazine, which made wood engravings the main way most Northern readers saw the war, since photographs could not yet be reproduced in newspapers. The picture is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, a method that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate quickly on site. Catalog records of the period have long credited Alexander Gardner with the image, though the Library of Congress lists that attribution as a former one.
