The catalog date on this glass negative, April 31, 1918, cannot be correct because April has only 30 days, and the record marks both the title and date as unverified. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives are valued records of that period. If the 1918 date is even roughly accurate, the picture would show Theodore Roosevelt in the last year of his life, after he had left the presidency in 1909 and was speaking and writing as a private citizen. The specific occasion remains unknown.
