Catalogued under the bare title "Roosevelt" and dated April 2, 1918, this is a Bain News Service glass negative, and the caption details were noted as unverified. Theodore Roosevelt had left office in 1909, but by spring 1918 he was a vocal private critic of the Wilson administration's conduct of the First World War and was pressing, without success, to lead a volunteer division overseas. Pictures of him from this period show a former president still very much in the public eye, and the plate's small format is typical of the agency's news work.
