The caption on this Bain News Service glass negative reads only "Roosevelt" and the date 4/2/18, so the name comes from an unverified caption card rather than a confirmed identification. The gallery places the sitter as Theodore Roosevelt, who by spring 1918 was a private citizen, out of office since 1909 and a sharp critic of the Wilson administration's war policy. The Bain agency supplied photographs of public figures to newspapers, so this portrait shows how the former president was presented to a wartime readership. Roosevelt died in January 1919, less than a year after this sitting.
