Union Square in Manhattan had long been a gathering place for labor rallies, socialist meetings and street speakers, and the title here points to a crowd of anarchists there. The date on the record, 7/11/14, places the scene in the summer of 1914, a tense period in American labor and radical politics. The negative belongs to the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news pictures to newspapers, so it was made to be reproduced quickly for daily readers. The title comes from unverified notes on the negative or caption card, so the identities and the exact occasion should be treated with some caution.
