The title names a man, "Wm. E. Lee," but the record is unverified and gives no date, so his identity and the occasion of the portrait remain uncertain. The picture survives as a glass negative, a fragile format that photographers used widely until flexible film replaced it in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. Its pictures record the people, streets and events that filled those papers, so this portrait offers a window onto the working press of that era.
