This glass negative is catalogued under the name "Wm. J. Lee," a title the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, though the Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced and distributed news and portrait photographs from about 1900 through the 1920s, and its glass negatives were stored and filed in batches much like this one. The collection's arrival at the Library of Congress preserves the agency's working files, so the image is valuable as a record of how press photography was made and organized in that period, even where the sitter's identity is uncertain.
