Heavyweight boxer Gunboat Smith is shown here alongside a second fighter identified only as Pelky, in a sitting the record dates to January 8, 1914. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied with the negative, which has not been independently verified, so the name of the second man should be read with some caution. Bain's glass negatives were made for newspaper reproduction, and their quick, sharply focused portraits give a useful picture of the sporting world of the 1910s.
