The record names this subject as Dr. C.M. de Cespedes, but the identification comes from caption cards and negative labels that the Bain News Service added, and it has not been independently verified. The image survives as a glass negative, a fragile format that Bain's New York agency used heavily in the early twentieth century to send news and portrait pictures to newspapers. George Grantham Bain built the collection from the agency's files, and it now preserves a broad record of American public life from roughly 1900 to 1920. Because the date is unknown, viewers should treat the sitter's identity and the picture's exact moment as open questions.
