Union Square in Manhattan is the setting here, one of the city's busiest public spaces and a gathering point for crowds, speakers and street traffic for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures of New York and national news to newspapers. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact moment is uncertain. Even so, the glass plate itself is a useful record of how the square and its surroundings looked in the Bain years.
