A glass negative titled simply "Mrs. Edw. Browning" identifies its sitter only by her husband's first name and surname, a common pattern on the caption cards of the Bain News Service. George Grantham Bain ran a New York picture agency that supplied news and portrait photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from the agency's own unverified data, so the sitter's full identity and the circumstances of the sitting remain open. Small glass plates like this one were the everyday medium of the period, prized for the sharp detail they recorded in a face and its clothing.
