The tall shot tower beside the Miner's Foundry on First Street sets this view apart. Such towers made round lead shot by pouring molten metal from a great height so the drops cooled into spheres before landing in water below. This print is one half of a stereographic pair issued as number 372 in the Gems of California series, commercial views sold to a public eager for images of the growing city. It captures an industrial corner of San Francisco in the mid-1860s, when foundries served mining and shipping.
