Men gut and clean fish on the quay at Hull, England, with a trawler tied up alongside, a scene that captures the working rhythm of one of Britain's great fishing ports around 1953. Hull's docks were among the busiest in the country for landing cod, haddock and other catch from the North Sea, and the fish were handled largely by hand on the pier before being packed and sent inland by rail and road. The photograph offers a glimpse of that labor-intensive trade in the decades after the Second World War, when the port was still a major center of the industry.
