Cider making is the subject here, set in the orchards of New England in autumn, a scene Currier & Ives returned to often because it fit the firm's appetite for rural, seasonal images. The lithograph was issued in New York in 1866, when the firm was producing prints in large runs for a middle-class public that bought them to hang in parlors and kitchens. Its catalog entry in the Gale Research raisonné, number 0350, places it among the many farm-life views the firm published in the 1860s. Look closely at the hand-colored details of apples, barrels and workers, which show how the firm used simple color to make a working scene feel warm and familiar.
