Few prints on this board set two societies side by side as bluntly as this 1850 lithograph, which places "slavery as it exists in America" beside "slavery as it exists in England." Its title draws on Edward Bulwer-Lytton's book *England and the English*, and the English half of the comparison points to the poverty and hardship of working people in Britain. Published by J. Haven in Boston, the sheet reflects a period when American abolitionists were pressing their case hard and were quick to point out the faults of others. The print uses a provocative equation to make its argument about both nations.
