Littlehampton, on the Sussex coast where the River Arun meets the English Channel, is the subject here, and the view centers on fishing boats lying alongside the breakwater that guarded the harbor mouth. Engravings like this one were widely reproduced in the nineteenth century to show Channel resorts and working ports to a public that was increasingly traveling to the seaside for leisure. The caption card gives no date, so the print is best understood as a picture of a busy small harbor in that wider period, when fishing and coastal trade still shaped the waterfront even as visitors began to arrive.
