What sets this picture apart is its subject: Black tradesmen posing together as members of a carpenters' union in Jacksonville. The caption card notes that the print was shown in the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a display largely assembled by W.E.B. Du Bois to present Black American life through photographs. Skilled building trades offered some of the steadiest wages open to Black workers in the New South, and unions gave such men a way to bargain collectively in a city where segregation was tightening. The date of about 1899 is tentative.
