The Windsor Hotel was one of Jacksonville's large lodgings, part of a city that drew winter visitors to northern Florida's mild climate around 1900. Jacksonville was then a busy rail and steamboat hub on the St. Johns River, and its hotels served travelers arriving from northern cities for the season. The view was made as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that captured fine detail, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views as postcards and albums to promote American towns and resorts. The negative later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949.
