Unlike the building's familiar north entrance, this drawing shows the south front, the side that looks over the gardens toward the Potomac. The sheet is a copy, made in January 1817, of a design Benjamin Henry Latrobe had proposed in 1807 for altering the house. Latrobe, who worked on the President's House and the Capitol, left a large body of drawings that shows how the building was planned, revised, and rebuilt. Because the British burned the house in 1814, drawings like this one record the architect's intentions for a building that was later restored and altered in ways that differ from the original plans.
