This elevation shows the south front of the President's house as it was drawn in January 1817, a copy of a design Benjamin Henry Latrobe had proposed in 1807 for altering that side of the building. British troops had burned the house in August 1814, and the rebuilding that followed gave architects a chance to revisit earlier plans. The watercolor washes and ink lines show the careful detail of a presentation drawing, and they record ideas that were debated before the rebuilt house took its final form.
