Sanford's Extract Jamaica Ginger survives as a large color poster, about 105 by 74 centimeters, advertising a ginger preparation under the Sanford name. Its date is recorded only as a range beginning in the 1860s, taken from an older caption card and not independently verified. Jamaica ginger extracts of this era were sold both as flavorings and as remedies for stomach complaints, and they were promoted on posters and in newspapers to reach shoppers and druggists. The same tincture later became notorious when adulterated batches caused widespread paralysis during Prohibition.
