This color poster advertises Paramount's 1934 *Cleopatra*, with Claudette Colbert in the title role of the Egyptian queen. Cecil B. DeMille directed the picture, and the poster highlights Colbert alongside Warren William as Julius Caesar and Henry Wilcoxon as Mark Antony, a cast that placed the story among the Roman powers of the late Republic. Hollywood's historical spectacles of the 1930s relied on lavish sets, costumes and eye-catching posters like this one to sell glamour and scale to audiences during the Depression.
