Built as a parsonage in 1770, the Old Manse stands beside the Concord River, and its grounds overlook the North Bridge where colonial militia faced British troops in April 1775. The Rev. William Emerson, grandfather of Ralph Waldo Emerson, built it, and the younger Emerson lived there as a newlywed. Nathaniel Hawthorne later rented the house and wrote the sketches collected as *Mosses from an Old Manse*. This color photochrom, issued by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1900, shows the house in the saturated tones the process was known for.
