Concord, Massachusetts, was home to Henry David Thoreau and Bronson Alcott, two of the central figures of American Transcendentalism, and this view records a house linked to both writers' circle. The photograph was made around 1900 as a glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced a large catalog of American town and landscape views during the period. By then Concord drew steady numbers of literary pilgrims, so such images served both as local records and as souvenirs of the town's literary reputation. The architecture and street setting offer a useful look at a New England village just before the automobile transformed it.
