Walden Pond, the glacier-carved kettle lake outside Concord, Massachusetts, is the setting here, and the cove pictured is the one associated with Henry David Thoreau, who lived in a cabin on the shore from 1845 to 1847 and wrote about the experience in Walden (1854). This c1908 glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery and landmarks for sale as views and postcards in the decades around 1900. By then the pond had become a pilgrimage site for readers of Thoreau, and the photograph captures a landscape that drew visitors as much for its literary associations as for its quiet water and pine-lined shore.
