Walden Pond, outside Concord, Massachusetts, is shown at the spot where Henry David Thoreau built his small cabin in 1845 and lived for about two years, drafting the essays later published as *Walden*. By the time this view was made around 1908, the cabin itself had long since disappeared, so the scene now stands mainly as a place known through his book. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued landscape views across the United States in those years, made the original negative, and this is a copy of one that broke.
